Inspiration By Faith

A friend sent me a link to a website called “Craftsy” recently because they are offering on-line fine art courses and she knew I was trying to do the same.

One of their artists began by quoting from St. Francis Assisi. I think I am remembering it correctly, “When a person works with their hands, they are a laborer. When a person works with their hands and their minds, they are a scholar. When a person works with their hands, their minds, and their hearts, they are an artist.

So an artist would have a distinct advantage to serve the Lord with their whole being (body, soul, and spirit) since they are already using their hands (body), soul (mind), and spirit (heart).

Combining those thoughts from SUZANNAGORETTI’s blog from Plato we see that the purpose of our work as artists is to give God the material to use to pierce, to shock people out of themselves, and re reawaken them with fresh eyes.

How honored I am to have such a noble calling. May the Lord empower me to fulfill His purposes.

“An essential function of genuine beauty, as emphasized by Plato, is that it gives man a healthy “shock”, it draws him out of himself, wrenches him away from resignation and from being content with the humdrum – it even makes him suffer, piercing him like a dart, but in so doing it “reawakens” him, opening afresh the eyes of his heart and mind, giving him wings, carrying him aloft.”
